Van Williamson Trio getting ready for jazz festival weekend

COVID caution causes dismay, but the show goes on!

In a surprising show of solidarity, the Van Williamson Trio have agreed among themselves that their highly anticipated return in concert at the Umpteenth Annual Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival will proceed as planned.

This is good news for the group’s many fans after a disappointing 2020 where many venues – and performers! – were reluctant to present live music. With good reason, right?

This year, despite the continued presence of this nasty little pathogen COVID-19 – and who even remembers COVID-18? – most sites take CDC-sanctioned precautions like recommendations for masks, obviously vaccinations and other things, for example, don’t go out if you’re feeling sick! It should be obvious, but I’m sure you remember HL Mencken’s comment.

It is therefore with great pleasure that the trio – with Van on guitar and pedals, Bob Abbott on bass and Wes Crawford on drums – will once again impose their interpretations of standard jazz tunes and other stuff. of the Great American Songbook to an informed audience. . Foisting R Us!

Of course, no one asked us to do it, but when did that stop us from jumping into the breach? We’ll be playing music by Duke, Miles, Wayne, Jerome, Cole, Harold and some funky versions of tracks by John Scofield, Freddie Hubbard, Earl Hagen, Santo and Johnny (maybe not that funky, but pretty fun) and Alexander Courage (the theme of “Star Trek”, as if you didn’t know). Lots of bossa also from Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luiz Bonfa and Rodrigo Amarante (the theme of “Narcos”).

Yeah, the weather’s gonna be great, and you can quote me on that. Here is our schedule: Friday, October 15, Dos Locos, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and G Rehoboth, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday October 16, Dos Locos, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Arena’s Deli, 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday, October 17, Back Porch Café, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
