The New Ross Piano Festival is the best of Bach with jazz, classical concerts and more


Everything from Bach to Holliger and quite a few Beethoven will be enjoyed at this year’s New Ross Piano Festival.

This year’s Jazz Piano Day is full of fantastic music for jazz lovers. There are four sessions to enjoy during the day. At 1 p.m. the Jim Doherty Trio, with Dave Fleming on bass and Myles Drennan on drums will perform in St Mary’s Church. Jim will be invited to tell some of his many anecdotes by Brian Trench. Tickets cost 12 euros.

At 3:30 p.m., Carole Nelson and her trio will give a free jazz session at Dunbrody. It will be followed at 4.30 p.m. by the multi-talented Myles Drennan at the piano.

The main concert of the evening will be given at St Mary’s Church by Jason Rebello. It will be presented by Cormac Larkin, jazz critic for the Irish Times. Rebello is a pianist who toured with Sting for six years. He recorded with Sting on his Grammy-winning albums Brand New Day and Sacred Love. On the night of September 11, 2001, Rebello recorded the All this Time DVD and CD live at Sting’s famous home in Tuscany.

He traveled the world with Jeff Beck’s band for six years and was introduced to the world of rock music. He worked with Beck on his 2010 album Emotion and Commotion and co-wrote the Grammy-winning single Hammerhead for Best Rock Instrumental Performance and was voted Rock Classic by Planet Rock Radio. His latest solo piano CD “Held” on Edition Records won Best New CD at the 2016 British Jazz Awards.

Technique, diversity and adaptability have allowed Jason to work with artists from across the musical spectrum such as Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Pee Wee Ellis, Joss Stone, Madeline Peyroux, Manu Katche and recently Charlene Soraia.

Tickets for this concert are 20 €. There are student concessions for both concerts.

In 2007 Jason, inspired by family life in Bath, embarked on the Jazz Rainbow Project.

Classical concerts start at 12 p.m. on Friday September 24 and continue until 6 p.m. on Sunday September 26.
