The John Jorgenson Gypsy Jazz Quintet will open its first US tour in several months at 7:30 p.m. on January 5 at SOhO, 1221 State St., Santa Barbara.

The Quintet and its gypsy jazz – the string swing created by “Django” Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli in the Paris of the 1930s – has been hailed as the “American ambassadors of gypsy jazz”.

John Jorgenson Gypsy Jazz Quintet are the only American group to ever headline the Django Reinhardt Memorial Festival in France and have been presented at Djangofests in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Canada.

Jorgenson’s compositions for the Quintet also draw on elements from Latin, Romanian, classical, rock and Greek music. One of the world’s elite gypsy jazz players, Jorgenson portrayed Django Reinhardt in the movie Head in the Clouds.

Jorgenson is a virtuoso of music across several genres, known for his world-class notes and musicality on acoustic guitar, bouzouki, clarinet and vocals for this show, as well as on mandolin, saxophone and to the steel pedal. He has contributed to numerous Grammy-winning albums and platinum records.

The quintet includes Rory Hoffman on guitar, piano and accordion, as well as Casey Driscoll on violin, Simon Planting on bass, and Rick Reed on percussion.

Reserved seats for the show are $ 35 and are available at
