PBJ and jazz shows at the Topiary Park

Jazz Arts Group PBJ & Jazz Family Concert Series Returns
at Topiary Park this summer for a program of three free live concert series. Cedric
Easton, Mary McClendon and Bobby Floyd will each pay homage to one of their jazz
hero in an hour of energetic and exciting music.

This season the theme is “A Letter to You”, inspired by Aminah’s visual art.
Robinson and his use of envelopes as a drawing surface in his “Unwritten Love”
Letters. ”These live performances will feature the music of another famous jazz
musician as we write them a musical “letter” of gratitude for their contribution to jazz.

Each concert will be accompanied by an artistic activity inspired by the work of Robinson.
July 10, 2021 – A letter to Art Blakey with Cedric Easton
Cedric Easton is one of Columbus’ most dynamic and exciting drummers, known for his
passion for everything related to the drums! In this concert, he and his band will write a musical
letter to iconic jazz drummer Art Blakey, whose explosive drums can be heard on
countless recordings with his band, The Jazz Messengers.

August 14, 2021 – A letter to Ella Fitzgerald with Mary McClendon
Every jazz fan knows the “first lady of song,” Ella Fitzgerald. In this concert,
we will shine the musical spotlight on Columbus vocal jazz legend Mary
McClendon, in this celebration of the music and life of Ella Fitzgerald. Marie and her
the band will rock and sing the audience during this exciting
performance.

September 11, 2021 – A Letter to Hank Marr and Gene Walker with Bobby Floyd
Every city has its own jazz sound, and for Columbus, it is without a doubt the sound of the
B3 organ and tenor saxophone. Star organist Bobby Floyd and his band will tell a
musical story about two legends of the Columbus B3 / tenor combination – the end
Hank Marr and Gene Walker. From the Beatles opening at Shea Stadium to creation
countless audiences dance the night away, there is so much to learn from these musicians!

PBJ & Jazz concerts are hour-long interactive concerts designed to introduce jazz
and American music to young children and their families. Featuring some of Columbus’
top musicians and ensembles, PBJ & Jazz concerts are the perfect way for families to
enjoy premium jazz music while kids learn and play.

The PBJ & Jazz summer concerts are presented at the Topiary Park free of charge by Jazz
Arts Group in partnership with Columbus Museum of Art. The series is made possible
with the support of Encova Assurances. Each concert starts at 12 p.m. and participants are
encouraged to bring their own picnic. At the end of each show, children are invited
to choose a “take out” art activity at the Columbus Museum of Art.
