Jonathan Butler to launch Cape Town International Jazz Festival online series
Jonathan Butler of Cape Town to kick off JazzFix – the new online series from the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) – with its 2019 back-to-school show. The Grammy-nominated guitarist will join singer and TV host Unathi Africa in a conversation as he relives the occasion memorable Saturday February 27.
Festival organizers announced the online streaming event shortly after the 2020 CTIJF was canceled in December 2020. Festival director Billy Domingo said JazzFix would use footage from the festival’s greatest moments and allow jazz fans to experience classical concerts from its 20-year-old archive as well as artist interviews..
CTIJF promises that the first JazzFix event – a mix of the sultry sounds of Butler and an in-depth conversation with host, Unathi – will be “an online experience of a lifetime”. The two artists will discuss Butler’s iconic homecoming performance at the 2019 Jazz Festival and his life in the ‘new normal’.
Butler moved to the United Kingdom in the 1980s and stayed briefly in the United States. His catalog spanning all genres – from R&B, jazz fusion, contemporary adult music and cult music – has earned him numerous awards and a loyal fan base in South Africa and abroad. Prior to his 2019 performance, the last time he graced the CTIJF stage, it was in 2009.
Tickets can be purchased for R80 from Computer ticket. The stream begins at 8 p.m. on February 27.
