Jazz singer Gabrielle Stravelli takes up Tuesday night residency at the Birdland Theater
BIRDLAND THEATER will feature acclaimed jazz singer Gabrielle Stravelli in a new month-long residency on Tuesdays starting May 31 at 5:30 p.m. After Stravelli opens the series, each month the club will introduce a new artist. Stravelli – who has been compared to the legendary Ella Fitzgerald by The New York Times, praising her “emotional intelligence, self-confidence and impeccable taste” – will be joined by pianist Michael Kanan and bassist Pat O’Leary. There is a $20 music fee. Birdland is located at 315 West 44th Street in New York City.
Stravelli’s trio have been collaborating for over ten years, developing a close musical bond that engenders spirited and spontaneous performances. Their arrangements feature a hard swing style rooted in straight-ahead jazz, coupled with Stravelli’s utterly modern lyrical renditions. For Birdland, the trio will share their signature blend of much-loved American Songbook classics as well as many wonderful lesser-known compositions, highlighting the full range of Songbook creators, from immigrants to African Americans to female composers and the lyrics. Stravelli’s residency follows her recent win at the 2022 MAC Award for “Major Female Vocalist” and a cover in the May issue of Hot House Jazz Magazine.
Gabrielle Stravelli created famed jazz pianist Fred Hersch’s song cycle Rooms of Light and toured the United States for the premiere of Wynton Marsalis’ Abyssinian Mass. , the 2016 All That Jazz Festival in Eleuthera, Bahamas and the 2014 Maree Sonore Festival in Venice, Italy. As the U.S. State Department’s “Jazz Ambassador,” she has performed and taught throughout Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and South America. .
BIRDLAND THEATER will present The Gabrielle Stravelli Trio on Tuesday evenings from May 31 to June 28 (no show June 21) at 5:30 p.m. There is a $20 music fee and a $20 food and beverage minimum.
