Camilla George is launching a jazz festival

The Sligo Jazz Festival kicks off its 2022 program at Hawk’s Well Theater on Wednesday June 15 with a performance by award-winning Nigerian saxophonist Camilla George and her explosive London-based band. Presented by Music Network Ireland, this is Camilla’s first Irish tour.

Born in Eket, Nigeria, Camilla George grew up listening to Fela Kuti alongside Jackie McLean and Charlie Parker.

She started playing the saxophone at just 11 years old when she won a music competition where the prize was saxophone lessons.

Camilla went on to release 3 critically acclaimed albums and performed at festivals around the world including EFG London Jazz Festival, Love Supreme and the Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

Camilla’s love for the fusion of African and Western music has made her a unique voice on the international jazz circuit. She will be taking her all-star band to Ireland for an unmissable 10-date tour blending her hypnotic blend of Afrofuturism, hip hop and jazz.

The group features many stars of the British jazz scene. She will be joined by Renato Paris (keyboard and vocals), Jihad Darwish (electric bass and double bass) and Rod Youngs (drums).

The launch of the Sligo Jazz Festival program will start at 7.00pm with an aperitif, followed by the show at 8.00pm.
