Jo Harrop and his band will perform a selection of numbers from his critically acclaimed debut solo album, The Heart Wants, alongside a handful of Great American Songbook favorites, on The Spiegeltent on Sunday, July 3.

Written and recorded over the last year when the world came to a sudden halt in the wake of the pandemic, The Heart Wants is an album about love and life, about loss and then finding yourself in silence after the end of the applause.

With no show in her diary, she began working on what would become her first album of original material featuring an illustrious roster of world-class jazz musicians.

“We wrote and recorded The Heart Wants songs before we had a chance for people to hear them live, which is the ultimate test,” Jo said.

“Songs don’t really come to life until you play them in front of an audience, so I’m incredibly excited to finally be able to bring them to life on stage as part of the Harrogate International Festival.”

Jo was born in Durham and grew up with a heady musical regimen of Nina Simone, Billie Holiday and Aretha Franklin. After moving to London, she quickly established herself as one of the most unmistakable voices in British jazz, performing everywhere from Ronnie Scott to the Royal Albert Hall.

After signing to London jazz label Lateralize Records, she recently received a slew of rave reviews for Weathering The Storm, her debut with guitarist Jamie McCredie. The Guardian dubbed it “a gem of an album: simple, modest and perfect”, while BBC 6 Music’s Iggy Pop fell in love with her voice, calling her “a very good jazz singer“.

The answer to Harrogate’s own sticky-floor jazz club, Spiegeltent will host a number of world, jazz and cabaret events from June 30 to July 9 in association with Ogden of Harrogate.
