Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral is looking for volunteers for the September 6th event
As the Quiet Resorts take advantage of the midsummer, a small group of locals are planning and hosting a light end-of-summer celebration known as Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral, which is back after a hiatus. one year. due to COVID-19 restrictions.
To help make the onset of fall a little more palatable, locals and visitors alike can celebrate the end of the summer season with the Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral which begins at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, September 6. of Labor Day, on the Bethany. Walk to the beach. Mourners carry a coffin with a mannequin depicting the summer of 2021 from the north end of the promenade to his final resting place at the bandstand. Music is provided by the combined efforts of three Dixieland jazz groups.
âThe Bethany Beach jazz funeral is comparable to the jazz funeral that takes place in New Orleans and celebrates the lives of those who have passed away,â said festival co-chair Carolyn Bacon.
âThe Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral is now in its 35th year and from the start our event was designed to be a fun event,â said Festival Co-Chair Marie Wright. âWe want to celebrate the dedication and hard work done by our visiting summer locals and our true local family members who live, work and raise their families in the quiet resorts. We want to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who makes summer in Bethany possible. “
Moss Wagner, a former Bethany councilor and businessman who owned and operated the Bethany Beach Ice Cream Parlor and the Moss Boss’ Ice Cream Shop, founded this late summer celebration. Wagner’s original idea was to throw a small party for local businessmen to celebrate the closure of the traditional summer resort season on Labor Day. It became a citywide celebration with a Dixieland band and a funky funeral procession.
