The 50th anniversary celebration continues at the Artscape Theater Center, with an exciting jazz festival taking place this weekend, September 10-13.

Launched in 2003, the Youth to Masters Jazz Festival focuses on developing skills in the jazz genre and promoting new emerging talents in jazz music.

The festival kicks off on Friday with seven young aspiring jazz musicians and instrumentalists based in the Western Cape who made the selection following auditions held earlier this year.

Days two and three of the festival will see musicians who have carved out names for themselves in jazz, rising from youth to legend in recent years.

My role is also a reminder that there is still a lot to do with jazz in the country, and in the whole world for that matter.

Young people should take these examples from us. They have to know that we have to hone our craft, respect it, be on stage and just be brilliant. That’s what we’re going to be doing all weekend.

The Festival is part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the building that has housed the Artscape since its inception as Nico Malan in 1971.
